Well Mets Fans, it could be the end of Brandon Nimmo’s time as a Met. A report by Mike Puma of The New York Post suggests that the Mets are not really in the running for star center fielder. The two sides have been in contact but they are not going to meet this week at the Winter Meetings. SNY reporters also stated that “There is a sense that the Nimmo market is getting a little far away from the Mets.”
Hello everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful day. I’m Caden Philip and I am so happy to back with Round 2 of Curveball.
We can talk more about Nimmo a little bit later, but here is a couple of quick notes regarding the Mets. Edwin Diaz was selected to the All-MLB Team last night. Earlier today he was also announced as the Trevor Hoffman NL Reliver of the Year. Diaz posted a 1.31 ERA in 2022 along with a 0.75 WHIP and an outstanding, 14.3 K\9. He pitched 62.0 innings recording 32 saves and only blowing 3 saves. SP Max Scherzer and SS Francisco Lindor were named to the All-MLB Second Team last night. In addition, the Mets have resigned Relief Pitchers Tommy Hunter and Sean Reid Foley to minor league deals to bolster the bullpen. Both got stints in the big leagues last year with Hunter posting a 2.42 ERA in 22.1 innings and Reid Foley having pitched 10 innings with a 1.40 WHIP.
With that being said, let’s talk about Brandon Nimmo and the possibility of him not joining the team next year. As I noted yesterday, there aren’t many guys like Nimmo in the game today. He gets on base at an outstanding rate. He had a .367 OBP and a .800 OPS in his 2022 campaign. He has always been a great Center Fielder posting a 1.000 Fielding Percentage in 2022. So, if Nimmo decides to go away, the best option from now on is Bryan Reynolds. The Outfielder hit 27 homeruns last year and requested a trade from his team, The Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets would have to make a sizable trade to get him. They might even have trade multiple Top 10 or Top 5 prospects if they want to get the slugger.
Other options are Andrew Benintendi or, the most recent candidate, Kevin Kiermaier. Kiermaier is a defense first guy. He has 3 Gold Gloves and one Platinum Glove out in the Outfield. Injuries has been an issue with him, only playing in 63 games last year with the Rays, however when healthy, he is a wonderful fielder. He will not be that expensive and it will enable the Mets to spend more money on the starting rotation and their bullpen.
That will do it for the Second Edition of Curveball. I hope you enjoyed and be on the lookout for any future blogs. Have a nice rest of your day! LET’S GO METS!
