Damn. This stinks. Carlos Correa will not be a New York Met. He finally passed a physical with the Minnesota Twins and the two camps have finalized a 6-year $200 million deal. It might be a somber time for most Mets fans but there are somethings that will change, maybe for the better. This is CURVEBALL.
Hello everyone, Caden Philip here.
I really thought this deal would get done. Most insiders had said that Correa would be in the blue and orange, but he isn’t. For those who do not know, Carlos Correa failed his physical with the Mets, and his deal fell through, as it did with the Giants in December.
However, I am not here to talk about what has happened, but what is still to come for the Mets.
With Correa out of the picture, we will most likely see a 3rd Base competition in spring training between last year’s 3B Eduardo Escobar, and the Mets 2nd best prospect, Brett Baty. Escobar did not have a strong showing in the first couple of months, posting a .221 AVG from April through July. He was injured in August, however, in crunch time, he was impossible to get out. His September batting average was .340. Baty on the other hand, is a top 20 prospect in all of baseball. He did not have a strong showing in the big leagues in the limited time he was up, posting a .184 BA and a .586 OPS in 38 AB’s. It was his first taste of MLB action and not enough to pass judgement. I think Escobar has a slight edge coming into Spring Training, however if he slips, the Mets will not hesitate to put Baty at 3B.
DH is also a big question mark for the Mets. I think that the loser of the 3rd base competition will determine that position. If Escobar wins, Francisco Alvarez will be the DH and Baty will be sent down to AAA. If Baty wins outright in Spring Training, Escobar will be the DH and Alvarez will be sent down to AAA. The last scenario is that Escobar wins in Spring Training, however Baty takes his spot at some point in the season, then Alvarez will remain at DH, and Escobar will be moved to the bench. This means that either Alvarez or Baty, would take up a roster spot. I do not think both will not make it out of spring training.
There is more news for the Mets. They are now in on RP Zack Britton. The lefty is best known for having 0.54 ERA in 2016 with the Baltimore Orioles. His 0.54 ERA is a reliver record. I also have a feeling that front office might make a blockbuster trade. I no factual evidence, just a feeling.
That’s it for today’s blog. I am Caden Philip and LET’S GO METS.
