Holy crap. Carlos Correa is a New York Met! I know this might be a shock to people who haven’t seen the news but this is true. Let’s talk about Correa’s rollercoaster ride of a free agency.
Hello everyone! I am Caden Philip. Welcome to CURVEBALL.
Everyone knows Carlos Correa is an elite player. His new 12-year, $315 million shows it. The 2015 Rookie of the Year has played the majority of his 7-year career with the team that drafted him, the Houston Astros. Of course, he is best known for playing for those Astro teams that were accused of sign stealing. After his tenure with the Astros was over he headed to the Twin Cities to play with the Minnesota Twins. There, in 2022, Correa had another fantastic year posting a .291 avg, 22 HR, 64 RBI, and a .834 OPS. At the end of the season he decided to opt out after his first year with the Twins, leaving the final two years and $70.2 million of his contract.
The reason why Correa’s deal with the Mets came out of no where was because he had already agreed to a 13-year $350 million with the San Francisco Giants. After the team abruptly canceled Carlos Correa’s press conference, people started to get curious. It turns out, Correa failed his physical with the Giants. The deal fell through, and Uncle Steve came through again, picking up another superstar this offseason.
This might raise some questions. If Correa failed his physical with the Giants, will he fail his physical with the Mets? Possibly. Teams look at physicals and have DIFFERENT requirements that each player has to meet in order for the team to complete the deal. Correa will have to check off the Mets’ boxes. Most likely, Steve Cohen would have asked questions about what caused Correa to fail the physical and the Mets must have been comfortable with the answers they received. However, you never know.
What is the Mets payroll now after the Correa deal? The payroll sits around $384 million. They also have around $806 million committed to players they signed this offseason. The luxury tax is about $111 million. The tax is more than 10 MLB team’s total- payroll.
That will be the end of today’s blog. Overall, a very happy day for the Mets. As always, I am Caden Philip and, LET’S GO METS!
